Ways to Go Green with Your Beauty Routine

Good News Pest Solutions Team November 02, 2018

We’re continuing our series on going deep when going green. We’ve already covered your house, your yard and your food. But have you ever considered going green with your daily beauty routine?

Don’t Just Jump Right In

For starters, the best way to go green with your daily routine is to use up the products you already own before investing in new items. Sure, you want to start living greener, but you’ve already bought the products. Throwing them out now just adds to the landfills – and chemicals at that. The best thing for your pocketbook, as well as the environment, is to use up the stuff you already have, transitioning to more environmentally-friendly products as you go. And as things progress, you might even discover that there’s some products you don’t even need to replace. There’s also several natural substitutions you can try: coconut or almond oils for facial cleansing, removing makeup, and moisturizing; baking soda for exfoliating, softening, and washing hair; and apple cider vinegar for lots of different things.

Slow Your Roll

You may be familiar with the phrase, ‘there’s more than one way to loofah a cat.’ Okay, no, we made that one up. But consider this – the largest use of water in most homes is showering. But most people wouldn’t see much difference in their personal hygiene from skipping a shower or two – or just showering every other day. In fact, some naturists point out that too much showering wreaks havoc with the microflora in your skin. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends kids bathe 2-3 times a week instead of every day. In the meantime,  you can use baby powder, salt & sugar scrubs, or coconut oil as an alternative to daily showers.

While We’re on the Topic…

Washing your hair is another essential that doesn’t need to happen as often as most of us do it. In fact, styling slightly greasy hair, as weird as that sounds, is often easier than managing freshly laundered locks. It’s better for the environment, too. Cutting down on the frequency you wash your hair means you’re using less product in fewer plastic containers. And if you make the shift to fully organic shampoo and conditioner, the added cost of the green options is more spread out. Or, you can even make your own hair wash with baking soda and apple cider vinegar.

To Wrap It Up

Don’t. Wrap it, that is. Plastic pollution is one of the biggest environmental problems we face. You can cut down on your plastic waste by buying unwrapped, aka, naked soaps and bath beads. Bar soap can be just as effective as liquids – some of us even remember when that was our only option. You can also buy your shampoos and other products in bulk at a warehouse store like Sam’s or BJ’s and refill your existing containers, saving them from the trash heap. You can minimize or completely eliminate perfumes, and even make your own DIY deodorant. It’s becoming easier every day to save and steward the planet we all love while still maintaining a reasonable lifestyle. When we first made the commitment to use all-natural, 100% reduced-risk pest control methods, our competitors thought we were crazy. But we’ve discovered even when there’s a higher cost, it’s worth it - and most of the time, the natural solutions are more effective. If you’d like to learn more about the reduced-risk products we’ve successfully employed for happy customers from Casey Key to North Port, one of our highly trained staff would love to discuss it with you.
