We are just a few days away from celebrating Father’s Day. Although the two holidays both started within a year of each other, Mother’s Day is far more popular and celebrated. Interestingly enough, though, while we generally spend more money honoring moms, we’re much more likely to buy a gift for dear old dad.
I guess we figure he doesn’t need a spa day or a fancy meal. And truth be told, the number one thing Dads say they want for Father’s Day is to spend quality time with their kids.
Since it’s hard to put a bow on that, here are some suggestions that your dad might just find perfect. And no, like the headline says, we have no ties on here. Neckties were a traditional gift for years driven by the Father’s Day Council, aka New York Associated Menswear Retailers. In fact, tie salesmen saved the holiday, but we think it’s high time we got a little more creative for Dad’s day.
We’re not quite sure how this pile of ideas ended up on our desk, but we were assured men like fishing. If that describes your dad, you might want to get him a submersible bag or backpack. These work as well underwater as above and keep his gear clean, dry, and ready to go.
A fly-tying kit or carry-on rod and reel bag is another can’t-miss purchase for Pop. A shallow fly puck fits right in any pocket and allows Dad to bring a handful of his favorite lures wherever he goes. A riverkeeper digital thermometer is a fine gift that won’t break the bank but that Dad will take everywhere. And of course, a hat always works - be it trucker, baseball cap, or reflective boonie hat.
Or why not grab a gift mom will appreciate too? Clear some of that clutter with a fishing rod rack that attaches directly to the garage door. Dad will always know where his rods are, and that’s one less pile of things on or next to the shelves.
It’s really hard to go wrong with a classic Swiss Army Knife. A timeless gift, and if your Dad is like many of ours, one he manages to misplace on a regular basis. Even if he already has one, a Swiss army knife is an everyday carry you can’t have too many of. Spring for a little extra more to add the personal touch of engraved initials and dad will be as happy as a clam.
Don’t discount the usefulness of a small Swiss army knife that rides on Dad’s keychain. Or a fun alternative for a more handy dad is the Leatherman Micra - a very versatile tool for tackling the honey-dos on his list.
If dad’s into grilling, add a tech touch with a ThermoPro wireless meat thermometer with Bluetooth capabilities. No more guessing about the perfect sear – dad just sets it for medium, rare or well done and it alerts him when the time is right to flip the meat or remove it from the coals.
Today’s dads often have a hard time slowing down. But they didn’t grow up and have a family just to never spend time with them. Help dad out by making time for him to spend with the people he loves most or just be able to relax without falling asleep in front of the TV.
There are plenty of online classes - whether you do Master Class, Udemy, Skill Share or BBC’s Maestro you can find dad a class, or pick up a package that lets him expand his mind or work with his hands to create something new. And when you gift it, offer to take the class together. Local libraries also offer hands-on classes for free or an affordable low fee. Leatherworking, woodworking, even scrapbooking and cross-stitch can be fun with the right crowd.
If all else fails, organize a family game or movie night where Dad gets to spend time with the people he loves most. Hint: let him pick the movie or game and no one gets to complain. Even if he trash-talks when he wins.
And you know what would really make dad’s day? Not having to worry about bugs in the house! Okay, maybe that’s an outlier gift, but our Go Green Perimeter Plus is affordable and helpful for the whole family. If you’d like to learn more, please give us a call.
