Florida University Battling Zika

Florida University Battling Zika

Good News Pest Solutions Team September 30, 2016

Florida leads the US in cases of Zika virus, both for travel related and local transmissions, and that is not a record we’re proud of! Federal and State money has been committed to finding a way to stem the tide of the rapidly spreading virus. The standard advice of eliminating mosquito breeding grounds by removing standing water and containers that could get water in them still endures, but with everyone scrambling to find a solution, all options are being considered. While some are still advocating the use of the dangerous pesticide DEET, thankfully there are other alternatives being investigated. Researchers at the University of Florida in Gainesville are working on synthetic insecticides, methods for mosquito sterilization, and how discovering that another species of mosquito – the Aedes albopictus (Asian tiger mosquito) transmits the virus may require different precautions. Additionally, a graduate student at UF is leading the charge, thanks to research she started working on 6 years ago for mosquitoes spreading the dengue and chikengunya viruses. Casey Parker & her Entomology professors developed a backyard trap for female mosquitoes looking to breed – a small cup of standing water that is laced with a slow acting pesticide that kills the momma mosquito and her eggs. As we’ve explained in the past, mosquitoes are the #2 pollinators after bees, so methods that lead to their death are particularly disturbing. Luckily, there are other options. Instead of dangerous and untested chemicals, sterilization or a mosquito trap that could just as easily cause harm to birds, chipmunks and squirrels looking for a quick drink, why not a solution that's safe for the whole family, the environment and the mosquitoes. That’s what we offer with our Exclusive No Bite Zone product. A backyard treatment that’s organic, safe for all mammals, and, instead of killing hungry momma mosquitoes, it turns them and their unborn children into vegans! Imagine if we didn’t have to worry about mosquitoes spreading any viruses to humans or animals because they just don’t crave our protein-rich blood. That’s a world we’d love to live in – and you can help make it possible! Here at Good News Pest Solutions, we care about the environment and endeavor to use cutting-edge, natural, eco-friendly pest control measures that are safe for our earth and you, while being highly effective at controlling pests.
